Speedway is a motorcycle sport raced on a flat oval of dirt, loose shale or crushed rock. Four riders, sometimes up to six, cover four anti-clockwise laps and slide their bikes sideways into each bend. The machines have no brakes and a single fixed gear; in the Grand Prix series they carry 500cc engines that run on pure methanol.
A single race is called a heat, and four laps take around one minute. In the Grand Prix, riders line up in numbered gates, red on the inside (gate one) through to yellow on the outside (gate four), and the starting tapes are released by a randomised electronic system.
Scoring follows the 3-2-1-0 scale: three points for the winner, two for second, one for third, nothing for last place, an exclusion or a retirement. Over a meeting these points add up, either for each rider or for a team.

Speedway is governed internationally by the FIM. The official individual World Championship was first held in 1936, and since 1995 it has been decided through the Speedway Grand Prix series. A Grand Prix round runs like this:
Stage of a round | What happens |
|---|---|
Main programme | 16 riders, 20 heats, race points on the 3-2-1-0 scale |
Straight to the final | the two riders with the most race points |
Last-chance qualifiers | riders placed 3rd to 10th race in LCQ1 and LCQ2; each winner joins the final |
Final | the two direct qualifiers and the two LCQ winners; the winner takes the round |
Championship points | 20 for the round winner, 18 for second, 16 for third, 14 for fourth |
The rider with the most championship points over the season is world champion. In 2026 the series had 10 events, and the title went to Robert Lambert of Great Britain, who finished on 162 points at the last round in Toruń, Poland, on 26 September. The 2027 calendar has 11 rounds: it opens in Donji Kraljevec, Croatia, on 1 May and ends with two rounds at Gillman Speedway in Adelaide, Australia, on 29 and 30 October. The group "Grand Prix 2027. Winner" covers bets on the 2027 speedway world champion.
The SGB Premiership has been the top division of league speedway in the United Kingdom since 2017. Six teams contested the 2026 season: Belle Vue Aces, Ipswich Witches, King's Lynn Stars, Leicester Lions, Northampton Foxes and Sheffield Tigers. In a league meeting each heat has two riders from the home team and two from the visitors, and a meeting usually runs to fifteen heats. After the regular table, the 2026 title was decided in play-offs that ended in a Grand Final.

At five rounds of the 2026 season, qualifying ended with a four-rider sprint race. Its winner earned four championship points, with three for second, two for third and one for fourth, and also had first choice of starting position for that evening's Grand Prix.
