Germany. Bundesliga 2026/27 for Djibouti: Bayern defend, Schalke return
The Germany. Bundesliga is Germany's highest football league, organised by the DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga). It was first played in 1963/64, and 2026/27 is its 64th edition. Eighteen clubs meet twice, home and away: 34 rounds and 306 matches, plus two play-off games once the league is over. The 2. Bundesliga and the 3. Liga form the next two levels, while the DFB-Pokal, Germany's knockout cup, runs beside the league from August to May.
FC Bayern München are the holders. They settled the 2025/26 title on 19 April 2026, four rounds before the end, with a 4:2 win against VfB Stuttgart: a 34th Bundesliga crown for the club and its 35th German championship overall. They finished on 89 points with 122 goals, beating their own Bundesliga scoring record, and completed the double on 23 May 2026 with a 3:0 cup final win over the same Stuttgart at Berlin's Olympiastadion. Between 2013 and 2023 the Munich club won eleven straight titles; Bayer Leverkusen broke that sequence in 2023/24, and Bayern reclaimed it in 2024/25 before keeping it last season.

The two automatic promotion places went to FC Schalke 04, winners of the second tier with 70 points from 21 wins, 7 draws and 6 defeats, and to SV Elversberg on 62. Schalke come back after three years away; Elversberg play their first Bundesliga season. SC Paderborn 07, also on 62, completed the trio through the play-off: 0:0 in Wolfsburg on 21 May 2026, then 2:1 after extra time at home four days later. For 2026/27 the two extra Champions League berths that UEFA awards to the best-performing associations went to England and Spain, so Germany has four places in that competition this season.
