LaLiga, officially the Primera División, is the top tier of Spanish football and has been contested since 1929. It is played as a double round-robin: twenty clubs meet one another twice, home and away, across 38 rounds, and the champion is whichever club sits first once the last round is complete. The same table decides who goes down, as the three lowest clubs drop into the Segunda División and three clubs from that division step up to replace them. The national cup, the Copa del Rey, runs as a separate knockout competition and sends its winner into Europe.
FC Barcelona begin the Spain. La Liga 2026/27 as holders. Under Hansi Flick they won the 2025/26 title, the club's 29th and its second in a row, and sealed it on 10 May 2026 with a 2:0 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou: Marcus Rashford scored from a free kick, Ferran Torres added the second, and the gap at the top grew to 14 points with three rounds left. Real Madrid still hold the record with 36 titles. Atlético de Madrid have 11, Athletic Club 8 and Valencia 6, and across the whole history of the division only nine clubs have finished as champions. LaLiga sides have also won the European Cup and Champions League 20 times between them, more than the clubs of any other league.
